Rama is a thai restaurant in/near Gaslamp Quarter (in San Diego downtown). The ambience is simply fabulous. As you enter there's a lounge and from there a passageway leads to the dininig hall. There are sheer curtains between each table setting providing privacy to each party. The service is excellent, one of the best that I've seen. We just had to specify once to the waiter that we wanted our entrees vegetarian and then on he took care of everything. Even when he brought the hot sauce varieties he only brought the vegetarian ones without us needing to say so. This was when we discovered that the green chillies in a transparent liquid is actually green chillies in fish sauce! Coming to the food, it was also very scrumptious.
So all in all, the restaurant is almost perfect but that comes at a price. It's somewhat expensive. The only water that is offered is bottled water and yes you've to pay for it!

La Especial Norte, Leucadia/San Diego
Cuisine: Mexican
Rates:$
It's one of the many small mexican restaurants in Leucadia on Highway 101. We just happened to stumble upon it. The exterior is very ordinary but the interior is quite well done in a mexican way; it's not fancy but clean, nice and colorful. The staff is very friendly. Our waitress took good care of us.
We had had our lunch about an hour or two back, when we came across this place. There were so many restaurants on the way that we decided that we must stop at one of them and at least have something light to see if they're any good. Especially because we don't frequent that neighborhood much. We were in the mood to order some kind of chips and dips. Since it was a small place we didn't expect to get the complimentary chips and salsa; but there she was - our waitress- with a basket of freshly made chips and homemade salsa. The chips were nice and crisp and totally fresh. The salsa was just to our taste: spicy and flavorful. The lightest dish on the menu was (vegetarian)tostada, so we ordered that. Of course, there was a wide variety of soups but I'm too fond of soups; and I later heard that their soups are very tasty. Coming back to our tostada: the presentation was simply excellent. Just looking at that dish would make you hungry. It was accompanied by refried beans, mexican rice and cabbage salad; each of which was truly delicious. They were one of the best refried beans we've had. The tostada itself had toppings of beans, guacamole, sour cream and cheese; and it too was delectable. The quantity along with the chips was more than sufficient for two (of course appetites make a difference).

Celadon restaurant, San Diego
Cuisine: Thai
Price: $$
Celadon, in my experience is one of the finest Thai places in San Diego. Like most thai places, it's a small restaurant but very tastefully decorated. Right from the ambience to the food, everything is perfect. My favorite menu item is the spicy noodles. In fact this is the place that got hooked me to spicy noodles. Beware when you specify the spice level. They are really spicy, so if you don't have a very spicy tongue you might want to go for level 2-3. Their curries are also delicious. However, I must mention here that the best thai curry in San Diego is at Bali Thai (will review it at some later time). To top it all they give a free dessert of delectable tapioca pudding! My first encounter with this dessert was at this restaurant and I must say that it's absolutely delicious; light on the stomach and light on the sweet part. It's like the silver lining to the cloud: perfect for after-thai-dinner-dessert! I checked the website and it seems to have shifted to a new place. In it's previous location it also had free parking which is the biggest hurdle in going to any restaurant in Hillcrest; though it was in a hard-to-locate place for first timers. Maybe it's available in the new location too.

Surati Farsan Mart, Mira Mesa, San Diego
Cuisine: Indian
Surati is a fast-food Indian place. Housing a casual atmosphere, it offers various kinds of chaat, dosa, vada pav, etc. It has a cafe kind of ambience with a nice plasma TV screening some bollywood songs.
Most of the dishes on the menu are good though I must say that it's mostly a chaat-place so one should avoid having dosas there. It's like ordering lo-mein at a Thai restaurant. Yes dosa and chaat are both indian dishes but they belong to different regions of India and there are rare places which are expert in both. I like their vada-pav, that's the only indian place in San Diego which offers that dish! Other dishes like delhi chaat, dahi sev puri, etc. are also good. I would recommend the mango lassi. Service is quite decent. For more information go here.

Pokez Mexican Restaurant, San Diego
Cuisine: Mexican (duh?!)
In terms of food, especially vegetarian mexican food, this is one of the decent places in San Diego and in terms of looks it's probably the worst. When we saw it from outside, we asked ourselves whether we really want to go inside. It's got that shabby look, with lots of graffiti and posters on the outside wall. Had it not been for the excellent reviews we'd heard, we would've never stepped inside it even if it was the last restaurant on earth! Okay, that was about the outer appearance; but remember the proverb: "Never judge a book by it's cover? The tables and chairs are old, the walls have numerous old stuff hanging around; the more fashion-savvy would probably call it a "retro" look but I prefer to call it the-no-money-look. :) It was akin to what I would call a dhaba. Let's come down to what matters to your stomach - the food. This is the only place that I've seen that has so many vegetarian options. That's the biggest plus point if you're a vegetarian and the food is definitely good. Another plus: it's an extremely reasonable place when it comes to your wallet! It's located in the heart of downtown San Diego and seems to be a very popular place. For the duration that we were there, the restaurant was completely full and frequently there was a waiting line. For more information go to Pokez Mexican Restaurant.

Extraordinary Desserts
Cuisine: Desserts
Yes it's a dessert place in San Diego and was ranked #1 on signOnSanDeigo.com for 2006. Though my favorite is "Just Fabulous" - it used to be a dessert place but now for some reason they've reduced the focus on desserts. When we first went there, we'd ordered "chocolate platter" and it was just fabulous! Their decor was also nice. The way they used to decorate their desserts was beyond imagination. However, now that they no longer do that, my second choice becomes the first choice. Not that ED is not good, but JF used to be better! I must say that these dessert places have an area as big as a mouse hole. Actually I like the decor of the ED in Hillcrest, the one in downtown gives you the feeling that you're sitting in some kind of warehouse. All said and done their pastries are yummy! We took photos last time of the food that we ordered.
If you've a sweet tooth, then this is your place! For more information refer to Extraordinary Desserts.
